Halwa Sohan

Halwa Sohan

Halwa sohan is the traditional Rampur halwa made from samnak (wheat germ flour). Oral history, narrated by Rampur cooks, credits the royal hakims for creating the recipe for halwa sohan and other halwas. As halwa sohan is popular in Afghanistan and in parts of Pakistan, we can assume that the Rohillas carried the rustic samnak halwa to India where it was made more elaborate in the royal kitchens. Today this halwa is available at a few outlets in Rampur. Amanat Bhai’s shop near the qila is famous for being the favourite halwa maker of the royal family through generations. Hakimji is another famous outlet.
